My 2003 Jetta brake light switch had a re-call on it, you should check into that. It goes out about twice a year. I know because I've had to walk home because it woulndn't come out of park

CALL VW! I just had a problem with my 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg (1.8T). The brake light switch is on RECALL. You might be able to get it fixed for NOTHING. My brake lights weren't working, and I called the dealership, and I had the problem fixed (no cost to me) within a week. FYI- there is also a recall on the hazard light switch.
