How many US soldiers have been killed on the ground in Afghanistan?

Approximately 640 US personnel have died in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan since 2001. 34 helicopters and 14 fixed-wing aircraft have been lost to ACCIDENTS. 8 helicopters & 1 fixed-wing were lost to hostile fire; of which the lone fixed-wing was destroyed on the ground (it wasn't shot down). The DOD (Dept of Defense) is possibly COUNTING certain contract civilians in their casualty summaries. Therefore, the term US "Soldiers" may not be accurate. Especially when US Marines are present in Afghanistan...US Marines are "Naval Infantrymen"...from the Vietnam War back...any true Marine being called a "soldier" in the WWII/Vietnam days would let you know in a hurry about making that mistake. Note: There has always been talk about disbanding the US Marine Corps, for financial reasons (Tax reasons) the argument was the US did NOT need TWO ARMIES. If Marines are continuously being called "soldiers" by civilians, then the ground work (the seed is being planted) to de-activate the United States Marine Corps is being processed. As that will support the argument that the US has TWO armies. So if people want the Marines to disappear into history, keep calling them "soldiers."
