The bulk of the Iraqi Air Force was destroyed by "smart weapons" and other air delivered ordinance. Approximately 38 aircraft were shot down; the remaining survivors took off and sped into the country of Iran.

During the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, 259 Iraqi soldiers were killed and 361 were wounded. Also, and estimated 39 Iraqi aircraft were shot down, and 120 tanks and armored vehicles were destroyed. In addition, 4 Iraqi ships were sunk. Overall, Iraqi losses were light.

"No fly zone" operations were conducted post Desert Storm (in Iraq). Operation Restore Hope in Somolia was the next operation in 1993 (see film: Black Hawk Down).
Iraqi and Iranian aircraft were restricted from flying near US Warships during the 1980-1988 war in the Persian Gulf. One Iraqi aircraft fired a missile striking the USS Stark, killing several US Sailors. Later, a civilian airliner was shot down by the USS Vincennes with it did not properly identify itself.

The Iran-Iraq War-1980 to 1988, the US population followed the war more closely after the USS Stark (Frigate) was struck and nearly sunk by an Iraqi Missile. Later, the USS Vincennes shot down an Iraqi/Iranian civilian jet airliner, by accident. Operation Desert Storm-Jan/Feb 1991 was followed closely as it was heavily covered by CNN news. Lasting only 30 days (approximately), Desert Storm allowed the US population to follow the news as the Coalition advanced quickly and within weeks, it was all over. US Casualties, less than 200 deaths. Operation Iraqi Freedom-2003 to present; began as Desert Storm, and ended as Desert Storm. Then degenerated into it's current "Police Action" of restoring LAW, ORDER, and STABILITY in Iraq.
