According to 'The Times' March 8th 2008 and the scientists they reference, almost no birds or marine animals die from causes related to plastic bags. Apparently the wide spread idea originates from a misinterpretation of a 1987 Canadian study that found that FISHING GEAR, especially discarded nets, had killed over 100, 000 marine mammals over 3 years. An Australian study misquoted this as animals killed by plastic bags.
