The Bible recounts that a male-female pair of all animalswere in the ark. Possibly these were "young" animals so they took up less space. The exceptions were the Kosher animals of which 7 pairs of animals were taken along in the ark. Of course what the Bible means by 'kind' which is the word used, does not equate with species or subspecies as we classify them today, since the classification system we use did not exist. Since representative 'kinds' are able to diversify (e.g. Dog Breeds today) it was thus not necessary to have every single species as we have them today.
