There have been at least 48 attacks by Islamic terrorists in the US since 1977.

Though Muslims only represent 1% of the US population, more than 80% (186 of the 228 cases) of all convictions tied to international terrorist groups and homegrown terrorism from 2001 to 2011 involve defendants driven by a radical Islamic agenda, and 94% of terrorism deaths (mostly 9/11) were caused by Islamic terrorists.

Still, these Muslim terrorists only amount to .00004% of the total number of Muslims in America, so it's actually true what they say: "Most Muslims are not terrorists, but most terrorists are Muslim".

Answer 1

There were two attacks in the US by Muslim terrorists-- the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, and then the attack on America in 2001. In that same time period, there have been a number of domestic terrorism attacks by non-Muslims: including Timothy McVeigh's attacks in Oklahoma City in 1995, a series of attacks on women's clinics in various cities in the 1990s and 2000s, and an attack on the Atlanta Olympic Park bombing in 1996 by an extremist named Eric Rudolph.

An FBI report (refer to link below) shows that only a small percentage of terrorist attacks carried out on U.S. soil between 1980 and 2005 were perpetrated by Muslims. According to this report:

  • there were more Jewish acts of terrorism within the United States than Islamic (7% vs 6%). These radical Jews committed acts of terrorism in the name of their religion. These were not terrorists who happened to be Jews; rather, they were extremist Jews who committed acts of terrorism based on their religious passions, just like Al-Qaeda and company.
  • Based on our review of the approximately 2,400 terrorist attacks on U.S. soil contained within the START database, we determined that approximately 60 were carried out by Muslims.
  • Per this report, approximately 2.5% of all terrorist attacks on U.S. soil between 1970 and 2012 were carried out by Muslims.* This is a tiny proportion of all attacks.
  • If we look at worldwide attacks - instead of just attacks on U.S. soil - Sunni Muslims are the main perpetrators of terrorism. However: 1. Muslims are also the main victims of terror attacks worldwide; and 2. the U.S. backs the most radical types of Sunnis over more moderate Muslims and Arab secularists.).
  • State-sponsored terrorism is beyond the scope of this discussion, and was not included in our statistical analysis. Specifically, the following arguments are beyond the scope of this discussion, as we are focusing solely on non-state terrorism:
    • Arguments by University of Michigan Professor Juan Cole that deaths from 20th century wars could be labeled Christian terrorism
    • Arguments that our recent use of torture and double tap drone strikes are terrorism

Are most terrorists Muslim?

The answer depends on the geographic area and time period you're including. In the United States? Yes. From 2001 to 2011, 80% of convicted terrorists (186 out of 228 cases) were motivated by Islam. From 1980 to 2005, 94% of terrorism deaths (mostly 9/11) were at the hands of Islamic terrorists. In France? No. 81% of 2009 terrorist arrests in France were of separatists, not Muslims. From 2006 to 2009, Islamists represent 23% of arrested suspects (342 out of 1468), so not the majority. (However, this is a count of arrests, not attacks or deaths.)

What are the differences between Jewish terrorists and Muslim terrorists?

Prior to 1948, Jewish terrorists used many of the same strategies and tactics as some Muslim terrorists use today. Two examples are the assassination of the British envoy in Egypt and the bombing of the King David Hotel. However, since gaining statehood, Israel no longer needs to use these forms of terrorism. Some consider the attacks on the Palestinian territories as 'state terrorism'. Another, quite different form of terrorism reported in the press is the attacks made by Jewish settlers in the Palestinian territories on local Palestinians. - proud perpetrators of attacks on innocent victims with names, faces, and ages.
