Ronald Reagan was shot after attending a meeting by would be assassin John Hinckley Jr. who attempted to impress his favorite actress Jodie Foster. Reagan wasn't hit directly by the bullet, but Hinckley shot others seriously before causing a bullet to ricochet from the side of the limousine and hit Reagan below his arm, through his chest, rib, flying an inch from his heart, and through one of his lungs which eventually collapsed. Reagan suspected that the rib wound was caused by his bodyguard jumping on him into the limo when he heard the gunshots. Then immediately when the bullet wounded Reagan the police and security guards subdued Hinckley and Reagan had lots of life in him after the shooting, but almost came to death by the time he reached the nearby hospital. Eventually after thirty minutes, it was announced that Reagan would survive his wounds. Hinckley was arrested and trialed, but instead of prison he was announced to be guilty not by insanity and he was instead confined to an asylum where he still remains today.
