Officially (i.e. per the state), a total of six flags have flown over Texas. Going in order, they are: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederate States of America, and the United States.
In reality, a total of nine flags have flown over Texas. The ones that tend to get left out are:
7. The First Republic of Texas (1819). It was established by adventurers from the U.S. with the capital in Nacogdoches. It has no connection with the 1836-1845 republic.
8. The Republic of Fredonia (1826-1827) based in East Texas with the capital at Nacogdoches. It has no connection with the Republic of Freedonia in the Marx Brother's movie "Duck Soup".
9. The Republic of the Rio Grande (1840) based in South Texas and Northern Mexico with the capital at Laredo.
