According to the Book of Daniel, Daniel served under the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar from 597 to about 562 BCE, then under Belshazzar. The book credits Darius the Mede with conquering Babylon, and Darius was king of Persia from 522 to 486 BCE. Daniel served Darius with distinction until his death and then served Cyrus, who was actually king of Persia from about 560 to 530 BCE. Thus he served under four kings in the Book of Daniel.

If the above sequence seems strange, it is because the Book of Daniel was actually written about four hundred years after the events it sees to portray, and the author had a limited grasp of what was already ancient history. [This author's commentary is absurd. The Bible comes to us as a unit. The Jews were not an ignorant culture. The book of Daniel would not have found its place in the cannon alongside the Book of Ezra, which includes King Darius in historical timeline and his successor, King Xerxes, in the Book of Esther. That this author concludes that this person Daniel likely never existed and "served no king in Babylon or Persia" is more than enough to disqualify him as any time of reliable commentator in the area of Christianity (or Judaism). What hubris - no matter how "substantial" his home library is.] There is no evidence outside the Book of Daniel that the character Daniel even existed, although it should be expected that records would exist of someone who held such exalted positions in both the Babylonian and Persian empires. It is more likely that Daniel served no king, either of Babylon or Persia.

Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, Darius and Cyrus (Daniel, chapters 1, 5 and 6).

Daniel's gravesite is known to this day, in Susa, Iran. (See also: Reliability of the Hebrew Bible)

Ch.1 - Daniel in Nevuchadnezzar's palace; insists on kosher food.
Ch.2 - Daniel interprets the king's (Nevuchadnezzar's) dream, of a beast made of gold, silver, brass, iron and clay. It hints to four kingdoms.
Ch.3 - Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, Daniel's young friends, refuse to bow to a statue put up by the king. They are cast into a furnace but God prevents the fire from burning them.
Ch.4 - The king dreams of a great tree cut down and a man humbled by losing his sanity and living among the animals. Daniel tells him that this would befall him, the king; and it came true.
Ch.5 - The Chaldean king Belshazzar sees a disembodied hand writing on a wall. Daniel tells him that the mysterious words hint that his (Belshazzar's) rule will not last. Belshazzar is killed that very night.
Ch.6 - Daniel continues his regular prayers despite a decree forbidding such prayers. The king, Darius, has him tossed among hungry lions, but God prevents them from harming him.
Ch.7 - Daniel dreams of four strange beasts, hinting to four kingdoms.
Ch.8 - Daniel has a vision of a ram and a goat, hinting to Persia, Medea and Greece.
Ch.9 - Daniel prays to God.
Ch.10 - Daniel speaks to the angel.
Ch.11 - The angel tells Daniel of future wars between kings.
Ch.12 - Daniel is told that the meaning of the prophecy will remain hidden until the end-times.

It is true that only four are mentioned by Daniel, but he actually served under eight different kings. Four of them (between Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar) had short reigns mainly due to "palace intrigue".

Yes, King David was a prophet according to both the Old and New Testament. The prophets who wrote down their prophecies (think of the Old Testament Major and Minor Prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc.) declared their prophecy by saying God (YHWH) was speaking directly to them.David says this in 2 Samuel 23.The book of Acts in the New Testament also declares King David a prophet in Acts 2:29-35.

Where did Daniel from the Bible live?

Daniel's lifeIn the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim (BC 606), Daniel and his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were among the young Jewish nobility carried off to Babylon. The four were chosen for their intellect and beauty to be trained as advisors to the Babylonian court. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were given the Babylonian names, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, respectively. At the close of his three years of discipline and training in the royal schools Daniel was brought out into public life. He soon became known for his skill in the interpretation of dreams. Daniel made known and interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's dream; as well as a later dream preceding the king's descent into animal behavior, and many years afterwards, when he was now an old man, amid the alarm and consternation of the terrible night of Belshazzar's impious feast, Daniel was called in at the suggestion of the queen-mother to interpret the mysterious handwriting on the wall. For successfully reading the cryptic handwriting by an angel of God, Daniel was rewarded by the Babylonians with a purple robe and elevation to the rank of "third ruler" of the kingdom. It is believed that the place of "second ruler" was held by Belshazzar as associated with his father, Nabonidus, on the throne, though no where in the book of Daniel is Nabonidus mentioned by name and according to the book of Daniel Nebuchadnezzar was the father of Belshazzar. Nabonidus left Babylon in his son Belshazzar's care when he fled because of his refusal to accept the role of Marduk as the prime diety. The Hebrew word translated in the book of Daniel as "son" can mean any descendant. Belshazzar was actually the grandson of Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel interpreted the handwriting, and "in that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain".After the Persian conquest of Babylon, Daniel held the office of the first of the "three presidents" of the empire under the reign of Darius the Mede, and was thus practically at the head of state affairs, with the ability to influence the prospects of the captive Jews, whom he had at last the happiness of seeing restored to their own land; although he did not return with them, but remained still in Babylon.Daniel's fidelity to God exposed him to persecution by jealous rivals within the king's administration. The fact that he had just interpreted the emperors' dream had resulted in his promotion and that of his companions. Being favored by the King, Cyrus the Great, he was untouchable. His companions were vulnerable to the accusation that had them thrown into the furnace for refusing to worship the Babylonian King, Nebuchadnezzar as a god; but they were miraculously saved, and Daniel would years later be cast into a den of lions but was miraculously delivered; after which Cyrus issued a decree enjoining reverence for "the God of Daniel". He "prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Great," whom he probably greatly influenced in the matter of the decree which put an end to the Jewish Captivity (BC 536).Daniel's ministry as a prophet began late in life. Whereas his early exploits were a matter of common knowledge within his community, these same events, with his pious reputation, serve as the basis for his prophetic ministry. The recognition for his prophetic message is that of other prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel whose backgrounds are the basis for their revelations. The time and circumstances of Daniel's death have not been recorded. However, tradition maintains that Daniel was still alive in the third year of Cyrus according to the Tanakh. He would have been almost 100 years old at that point, having been brought to Babylon when he was in his teens, more than 80 years previously. Many posit that he possibly died at Susa in Iran. Tradition holds that his tomb is located in Susa at a site known as Shush-e Daniyal. Other locations have been claimed as the site of his burial, including Daniel's Tombin Kirkuk, Iraq, as well as Babylon, Egypt, Tarsus and, notably, Samarkand, which claims a tomb of Daniel, with some traditions suggesting that his remains were removed, perhaps by Tamerlane, from Susa to Samarkand.

Why did god call Daniel a prophet?

A:The Bible does mention more than one Daniel, but modern readers are generally concerned with Daniel from the Book of Daniel. Scholars say that this book was really only a second-century-BCE Jewish novel and that Daniel did not really exist. Daniel is considered a prophet by Christians, but not by Jews. The difference is no doubt based on the Christian use of passages in the book, that can be used as apparently foreshadowing the life of Jesus. On this view, Daniel became a prophet for Christians when they began to relate passages in the Book of Daniel to the New Testament.
