First of all, this has nothing to do with dogs cats or the care of fish. Second of all, to go with the scientific answer i have to say mermaids never existed, the chances of people ever evolving and returning to the water is slim, so mermaids and mermen (merfolk) probably don't and never will exist. There is no proof that merfolk couldn't exist though. Seafarers, posibly delerious after long amounts of time on the sea, probably saw normal sea life, like sharks, whales, dolphins, sea turtles ect. and mistook them for beautiful tailed lady's. so no, there aren't any mermaids left. :)
