* Healthy 19- to 50-year-old adults should consume 1.5 grams of sodium and 2.3 grams of chloride each day -- or 3.8 grams of salt -- to replace the amount lost daily on average through sweat and to achieve a diet that provides sufficient amounts of other essential nutrients.

You should consume at least 500mg of sodium a day. Over 2,500mg a day is likely to give you high blood pressure. If you have an annual physical, you should get a blood test. One of the tests is for sodium. If your sodium is below the acceptable range, you are setting yourself up for kidney failure. Your nerves are likely to stop working. If your sodium gets too high, you will get high blood pressure. A blown out artery in your brain is called a stroke which can also kill you.
