A heat exchanger is just a fancy name for the radiator. There is also a heat exchanger for the heating system in your car. This is typically located on the firewall on the passenger side of the vehicle.
If it does not open - vehicle will overheat rapidly - no cabin heat If it does not close - vehicle will not get to normal operating temperature and therefore no heat
make sure both knobs are all the way up on red for heat...

a dual stage can run at low or high speed depending upon heat load, a single stage has only one speed.
