Normally two but sometimes it can be up to 4 photos.

Most passport applications clearly specifiy how many photos are needed for that specific country. US Passport requires two passport photos.

It depends on the countries that you are a national of. If they allow multiple citizenship (all of them) then you can have as many as possible. If even one of them does not allow it, you have to either choose only that one or abandon that one.

For example: you can be a citizen of Australia, Canada, the US, the UK, New Zealand Italy and France at the same time. But if you live long enough in Norway and want to become a citizen of it, you have to give up all other 7.

For most countries, it is 2 photos but some countries require up to 5 photos (India OCI till 2011).

However, when you are filling up passport or visa application form, they clearly mention how many photos are needed.

Passport photos are expensive but you can use online services (see the related links) which will provide you 6 photos for $7 which you can compare to 2 passport photos for $11 at Walgreens or 2 photos for $15 at the US Post office.

You need 2 passport photos and will have to turn in your passport with the application. If you want to keep your old passport you can request it to be returned. There may be an extra fee for getting the old one back.
