If it's anything like earier 80's there will be 2. One from the battery and one from the harness. Then there will be a ignition hot to the small post on the starter which operates the cylinoid (SP?) I believe the hot side is about a 10-12 guage(red) and the cyl. is a 12-14 and is also red.
follow the wires that come off the positive battery terminal the starter has two bolts to take off then the starter comes off then unhook the power wires from starter
undo the wires then take the bolts out then put the new one in.
There's two wires to connect... just put them where they belong. Positive to the solenoid, negative to the starter body.

Sounds like a bad connection on the starter. Unhook the battery cables and then take the starter down and LOOK at the starter wires and make sure there tight and not touching each other.
