Christianity has historically been a major religion in Europe, with various denominations such as Catholicism, Protestantism, and Eastern Orthodoxy. While the influence and practice of Christianity have declined in some regions, it still remains a significant aspect of European culture and history. Each country in Europe has varying degrees of Christian influence.

Accurate statistics are hard to get, partly because differences in the question pollsters ask, or the the way it is asked or even the context, may give biased results. In other cases, commentators may seek either to exaggerate or minimise the proportion of Christians, for personal reasons. The following selection of statistics on religious affiliation (whether Christian or other) is taken from a variety of original sources, in an attempt to minimise any reporting bias:-

The British Social Attitudes poll of more than 3,000 people in the United Kingdom showed 44 per cent said they had no religious affiliation. Two-thirds of 18-24 year-olds in the United Kingdom also say they have no religious affiliation. This suggests that 56 per centof Britons have some religious affiliation, with about 50 per cent being Christian.
According to the religioustolerance website, a recent survey by the Institute for Social Research at theUniversity of Michigan showed that 14 per cent of the west German population attends church regularly, while the proportion in the former East Germany is only about five per cent.

The United States Department of State cites a poll taken in December 2004, in which 64.3 per cent of the respondents in France indicated they were Catholic, even if they never attended religious services, while a further 1.9 per cent indicated they were Protestant. Another poll taken in February 2004 indicated that 60 percent of those interviewed believed in God (As Christians, Muslims or Jews).

According to the most recent Eurobarometer Poll, taken in 2005:-

  • 80 per cent of Polish citizens responded that "they believe there is a God" (which was the fifth highest result in the European Union).

  • Towards the other extreme, 32 per cent of Norwegian citizens responded that "they believe there is a God"

  • 23 per cent of Swedish citizens said they believe in God, although 72.9 per cent of Swedes were registered as members of a Church. About 2 per cent attend church regularly.

In summary, somewhere around half of Europeans believe in God. Church attendance varies, but is generally less than 10 per cent.
