John Wilkes Booth was born in Maryland in 1838. he was the illegitimate son of theatre legend Junius Brutus Booth and his young mistress, an English woman named Mary Ann Holmes. Although his father was a successful actor, by the time John Wilkes was growing up, the elder Booth had abandoned his successful career in Europe to run away with Mary Ann. John Wilkes' upbringing was roughly what we today would consider upper middle class. When John Wilkes was 13, his parents were finally married which helped relieve some of the social stigma he suffered from being illegitimate. By the latter years of the war, he was one of the most famous and most highly paid actors in the country.
