handbrake adjustment on cougar
Remove the plastic cover from the puma handbrake. There is an adjustment nut under the cover that tightens up the brake.
there is no adjustment. need to get them serviced
If it has rear drum brakes, it's under the car, where the handbrake cable emerges from inside the car. If it has rear disk brakes, there is addition adjustment inside the rear disks on the handbrake shoe mechanism. This adjustment should be carried out before attempting to adjust the cable.
If the rear brakes are out of adjustment, the hand brake will not work..
Under the central console - this has to be removed by the 2 screws either side at the rear of the console and the 4 screws from the dash.
Remove side covers on rear ashtray and lift out unit. The adjustment nut needs a 10mm spanner. Just about take up any slack when handbrake is off. Don't over tighten.
OK........ Handbrake adjustment. The handbrake is normally self adjusting So either the cable/s are stretched, or the pads are well worn, and you have no adjustment left. 5 clicks on lever when applying normal/moderate pressure = correct adjustment. If not, then split apart handbrake lever trim, and remove. (Or break which ever happens first). The plastic surround on the handbrake lever needs to be prised apart on the underneath seam as the top seam has interlaced parts that might break. The floor/carpet panel is prized from the rear edge. Unclip & remove carpet panel surrounding lever, you will then see the adjusting nut, bell crank & cables. Chock front wheels, jack-up rear, AND SUPPORT SECURELY. Apply/ release handbrake 4 times. With lever set on 5th click, check that both rear wheels are locked. If not tighten adjustment nut until both wheels are locked. Release handbrake, check that both wheels rotate. Apply handbrake 5 clicks, check for locking - release, check for rotation. If happy, reassemble.
Chock the front wheels, place the car kin a gear and jack up the car. Release the handbrake and adjust it by 2 to 3 flats. Apply it to see if the adjustment has been made.
Step 1 - Remove the plastic trim around handbrake by pulling it up from the rear it will unclip. Step 2 - There is a 10mm nut you can turn this to adjust the handbrake. A good idea is to park on a flat and then see if the car can be easily pushed with the handbrake released. Step 3 Once the handbrake is adjusted to the correct amount replace the trim and firmly push down on it so it clips back into place. If you find this method does not improve your hand brakes effectiveness you will need to get you rear calipers checked as they may be fualty.
First make sure the the rear brakes are correctly adjusted. Next thing is to make sure the front wheels are choked so that the car does not roll during adjustment. Now release the handbrake. Next to the handbrake you will see two nuts on a threaded shaft. The bottom one is used for adjusting the handbrake whilst the top one is just a lock nut to stop the bottom nut from working loose. You will need to loosen the top nut and then turn the bottom nut to adjust the handbrake. The handbrake should be adjusted so that it holds the car when clicked 4-7 times.
