1500mg - 2400mg per day (milligrams per day) is what is reccomended. However, highly active people (run allot, soccer, cross-country, Wrestling, Basketball, etc.) would have a higher requirement to account for the lost sodium during strenous and long exercise periods. Sodium helps balance the cells inside the body (like balancing the chemicals of a pool or saltwater fishtank). If you take in too much you can develop diseases over time relating to the heightened sodium surrounding your body's cells (high blood pressure, etc.). It is next to impossible to achieve if you eat any processed foods (even seemingly healthy ones like a foot long turkey sub from Subway). Most people in the US consume or exceed their daily amount of sodium needs in a single meal.
