The above answer was true up until the 90s. On today's modern vehicles the 3,000 mile oil change is a total waste of money and oil and is only recommended by people who make money off oil changes. With today's modern oils and filters you can easily go 5,000, 7,000, or even 10,000 miles between oil changes. But, there are a few vehicles still made that do require the 3000 mile oil change. So, follow the recommendations as outlined in your owners manual and you cannot go wrong.
