I have the same model as you. I inherited from my great grandpa, and to the point of my understanding it was distrubuted around the 1930's.

Crescent Fire Arms Company was the manufacturer of the Nitro Hunter shotgun. It was as an exclusive in-house brand of Belknap Hardware in Louisville.

The value of a 1913 Steven 12 gauge single shot nitro special depends on its condition. This gun in excellent condition is valued between 75.00 and 100.00 as of 2014.

Is there any more to the name? Vorisek lists only single shot guns marked only "Nitro".

If there are no words besides Nitro marked on the gun, it was made by either WH Davenport or Crescent Fire Arms.

Ithaca Gun Co. manufactured your Lefever Nitro Special in 1940.

The "Nitro" refers to smokeless powder, so certainly not much before 1900, probably a few years later. The "and Tool" part of the name was not used after 1916.

There were many thousands of the Shapleigh King Nitro 16 Gauge with a double barrel. For the most part, they are worth about $50 to $100 depending on mechanical and finish condition.

The old nitro hunter was made in the early part of the 20th century. Most of the guns that i have seen are pretty well used. The value of the shotgun is about the same value of a modern single barrel in the same condition. There is no real collectors value to speak of, for the old guns. A man told me that he had been offered 500.00 dollars for a Nitro hunter. I responded, "Thats where two fools met, He was a fool for offering and you were a fool for not taking it". Might be a gun for fools with little retail value, but to some of us, this gun means something. The guns were bought for survival by old timers in this part of the country. That's why you probably won't find one in mint condition just like you won't find an old plow that is in mint condition. Lots of people have these guns as heirlooms. So, to use a cliche, that makes them "priceless" to some of us.

There is a web site called Old West Scroungers. They sell antique ammo and other items. If they do not have it, they are likely to help put you in the right direction. There web site is at the related link below.

I think probaly Stevens made them in the 1920s or 1930s to compete with other brands like the nitro hunter made by cresant arms
