James Marshall and a group of men went to Sutter's Fort to help John Augustus Sutter fix his mill, Sutter's Mill, when Marshall found a lump of something that looks like gold. After a few more tests, it was indeed gold! Soon, people caught "gold fever". The gold rush started in 1849.

This event led to the greatest mass movement of people in the Western Hemisphere and was the spark that ignited the spectacular growth of the West during the ensuing decades. The gold discovery site, located in the still visible tailrace of Sutter's sawmill, in present day Coloma California, is one of the most significant historic sites in the nation.
