The soviets soon realized that their efforts in blockading Berlin were unsuccessful since the British and Americans were flying in supplies, and so the Soviets lifted the blockade in May 1949.

It is because Germany was invaded by all the allied forces at the end of WW II and then divided into sections, to be administered by those various allies, that we wound up with an East Germany and a West Germany, and an East Berlin and a West Berlin. West Germany was the combined American, British, and French administered sections of the country, while East Germany (also known as the German Democratic Republic or GDR) was administered by the USSR. Since West Berlin, by a strange twist of fate, wound up inside East Germany, the USSR was in a position to economically strangle them, but Kennedy arranged an airlift to save them. It was one of the more dramatic moments of the Cold War.
