Sort of. The Crusades lead to new ideas and thoughts which lead to people wanting to explore. History came together all at once with new things that allowed people to explore. An example is the lateen sail which allowed ships to move sails to catch the wind rather than a fixed sail. The printing press was invented so people began to learn and think new ideas. Up until that the Church told people how to think and what to think. New science came back from the Middle East with the Crusaders that gave new information on the astronomy and the stars. Instead of thinking that man was the center of the universe they began to think that maybe there was something more. As new thoughts grew art grew and people began to experience things in a new way. They also found out that there were things like spices, silks, and new foods that the Crusaders came home with and that Marco Polo came back to Italy with in his luggage. All of this connected at the same time to produce a "rebirth", a Renaissance and that in turn lead to exploring. Nothing in history is disconnected and it is all interrelated in some form or fashion. Look at history as a series of connections and it will make sense to you.
