Russia was losing the war against Germany and Austria and the people were fed up. The tsar was overthrown in Februayr 1917 and a moderate government WA formed but it continued to pursue the war. The Bolsheviks overthrew the moderates in October 1917 (November according to the Gregorian calendar) and sued for peace, signing the treaty of Brest-Litovsk in March 1918, which made Finland, Estonia, Livonia, Kurland, Lithuania, and Ukraine independent of Russia. (Livonia and Kurland became Latvia later.) A civil war between the Reds (Bolsheviks) and the Whites (loyal to the tsar) continued for several years.
