The north was able to conquer the south because they had numerical superiority, better technology and a blockade that prevented the south from getting shipments so starvation and famine were rife in the south. Second, in the waning days of the Confederacy, Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia barely numbered 60,000 men. By that time, the northern General Sherman had completed the Union envelopment around the city of Richmond. General Lee decided to abandon Richmond and try to link up with Confederate troops still fighting General Sherman in the south, but the time for that had passed. On April 2, 1865 Union troops broke through the thin screen of Confederate troops guarding the town of Petersburg and quickly took the city. about a day later, Richmond was overrun by Union Forces, and soon flew the flag of the Union. Our good friend General Lee was trapped at Appotomax Court House on April 8. he surrendered on April 9. Thus, the Union took control of the south. Union deaths totaled nearly 600,000 killed or wounded. Southern casualties came in at nearly 350,000 killed or wounded.
