The "+" indicates that the telephone is an international number, and you need to find out what the international dialling code is for your country.

For example, the innerational dialling code for most European countries is "00", while in the US, it's "011". Therefore to dial a +44 number, from the US, you would dial 011-44 etc and from EU you would dial 00-44 etc.

If you are calling a UK (+44) from within the UK, you drop the +44 and dial a 0 instead, as you don't need to access the internationl telephone network.

As mobile phones have login built into them, they can work this all out for themselves, while most landlines have no logic, and will dial out exactly what you tell it to.

When you see "+" at the start of the phone number, this really means "dial your country's international access code". In other words, you should dial whatever code you need to start an international call in the country you are calling FROM.

For a lot of countries, including the UK and most of Europe, it will be 00. So, +1 929 101 2020 would be dialled as 00 1 929 101 2020.

Other countries use different codes, though. For example, in the USA and Canada you would have to dial 011 instead of 00.

The "+" indicates that the telephone is an international number, and you need to find out what the internationalaccess code is for your country.

For example, the code for making an international call from most European countries is "00", while in North America, it's "011". Therefore to dial a +44 numberfrom the USA, you would dial 011 44 etc and from EU you would dial 00 44 etc.

Mobile phones normally let you dial the + symbol directly and interpret it correctly using their own internal logic. To enter it you normally just hold down or make multiple presses on the 0, * or # key, depending on your phone.

In a telephone number, "+" is used to indicate an international call. You should dial the code used to begin an international call in the country you are calling from.

From most European and African countries, this would be 00.

From North America, it would be 011.

Other countries use different codes.

In place of the plus, dial your country's international dialing prefix (011 from the North American Numbering Plan Area, 00 from most European and African countries, etc.).

Why don't home phones have plus signs?

Because home phones are 'fixed' - Mobiles can be easily moved from one country to another. All the plus sign does - is access the international telephone network from wherever the phone is. Different countries have different numbers to access international dialling, and the phone knows, when you press the plus key, which number to dial.
