Go to your local Pep Boys or similar Auto parts store, and purchase two new struts. You will have to find the exact struts for your car, as the struts are different if you have a spoiler or if you have a rear wiper, and from year to year.
With the new struts in hand, as well as a flat head screwdriver or needle nosed pliers, open the trunk, have the new strut out and near the side you will work on first. There will be one metal clip on each strut holding it to the ball joint, pry this off with the screwdriver or the pliers. Support the trunk with one hand and then pull the old strut from the joints. The one remaining strut can not hold up the trunk, so you will have to continue to support it. Set the old strut aside, then grab the new one, don't mess with the clips on this one, simply press the ends onto the joints, they might take some force, but not too much. Repeat this process on the other side and you are done.
In the trunk
