Find the serp belt (on the front of the engine, which is not necessarily at the front of the car, depending on whether it is a transverse mounted engine). Look for the end of the engine opposite to the transmission.

Roll the belt over far enough to see the underside, where the teeth are. Use a strong light. Look for cracks that are at least half way through the belt, usually at the corners of the teeth. Missing teeth is a real bad sign.

Why would a car belt start squealing intermittently then get really bad and happen more often and then go away within a 3 month time span without any servicing?

Check if the belt if worn. If the belt is worn, check to see why that happened and fix the problem. If the belt is not worn, the squealing is due to some unwanted substance that came on the belt such as dirt, antirust, or oil. In this case, I also recommend that you replace the belt regardless if the squealing has disappeared because there is a chance that the belt may slip.
