An old quick trick is to remove the positive terminal from the battery while the car is running. If the car dies or runs very rough the odds are it's the alternator. A lot of auto stores will test the whole charging system for free.
There are several relays in that vehicle. Need to know which one you are looking for.
Yes, I know of no engine where the alternator is driven by the cam belt. The alternator is driven by a drive belt or serpentine belt.
To test the alternator if funds are low, let the motor idle and remove the negative battery cable, if the motor dies its probably the alternator.

As far as I know thevoltageregulstor is integral to the alternator.

My 1993 Pontiac Bonneville does the same thing, my dad ran some diagonstics and thinks it's the EGR valve. He's replacing it for me, and I'll let ya know if it fixes the problem.

A question that I have is do you know where the black wire with a white stripe runs to on you alternator harness? I need to know exactly where that one goes. My email is imp67ss@yahoo.com thank you.
Use a wrench to loosen the tensioner which keeps tension on the belt. Once this is loose, pull the belt off of the tensioner. It will then come loose from the remaining pulleys (A/C compressor, water pump, etc.). A diagram should be located on top of the radiator showing the path of the belt to help you know how to install the new one.
