go to your local parts store that sells haynes books and get the one for the car your working on. i just done one on a 93 but the 88 has a distributor and im not sure where to tell you to line up the distributor. but the manual will tell you step by step. My timing belt is in place and the engine is running fine, however i need to replace the belt. Here is how you find the timing marks if your belt snaped. First, gently turn the camshaft cog clockwise to line the delta shaped mark with the mark beside the cog, this is at 5 o clock. You will need to remove the crankshaft pulley to remove and replace the belt. Turn the engine with the number one spark plug out while blocking the hole with your finger, when you feel air escaping between your finger the engine is approaching TDC. Remove your finger and look inside the hole, the piston will be on its way up. Place a screwdriver in the hole and gradually turn the engine clockwise manually until the screwdriver rises highest. Remove the crankshaft pulley, the pin in the crankshaft should be at or close to 12 o clock,if not bring it there. You will find a small arrow on the crankshaft cog just beside the right of the pin, this should be already lined up with a mark behind the crankshaft cog, if not bring it there. Any of these two indicators will line up the crank shaft. The third cog that is similar to the cam shaft cog drives the distributor, this is lined up by rotating the cog to make the rotor brush point at the # 1 plug wire on the distributor cap.
on the harmonic balancer the big pully in front of the motor it will be a line the timing marks are visible from the front of the engine looks like a saw
