Scrabble is a 2 to 4 player word game. The object of the game is to score more points than the person or people are you playing. You get points when you place your letters on the board (when it's your turn of course). The letters/tiles are marked by numbers which show you how much they are worth. There are two blank tiles which have no point value, which means they aren't worth any points. The only good thing about the two blank tiles is that you can use them to substitute for any letter you want, but again, you don't get any points for that blank tile.

To start the game, mix up the tiles/letters in a bag. Each person grabs one tile/letter and the one closest to the letter "A" starts the game. Mix up the tiles again. Each person grabs seven tiles/letters (no peeking when getting your tiles). The person can start the game by placing two or more tiles/letters on the board. If the person who starts the game doesn't have any vowels or just doesn't like their tiles, he or she has the option to exchange them, but they will not have the option to place their tiles, until it's their turn again. The person starting the game can place any letter on the board where the star is. The first word that is played is doubled. When a person puts a tile on the board, that person must grab the same amount of tiles they placed. For example, if a person placed five tiles on the board, that same person grabs five tiles from the bag. The game continues with each person taking turns making words. The person that uses all seven tiles and makes a legit word scores 50 points, which is called a Bingo. Try to land on the special colors (premium/bonus squares) on the board to gain more points. A person can challenge a word that is currently being played, but if the word is in the dictionary, the person that challenged loses their turn and if the word isn't a valid word, then the player who was challenged must remove his or her tiles from the board. Also, you can only challenge someone, for the word that is currently being played and only if the next person after them has not placed their tiles on the board. Play continues until there are no more tiles left in the bag, when someone has used all of their tiles toward the end of the game, or when all players have passed on their turn twice in a row, then the game ends. The people that have tiles left, have to add them up and subtract them from their scores. The one with the highest score wins.

It is very simple when you get used to it. You will need:

1. A scrabble board

2. Pen

3. Paper

You can have 2 to 4 players. With the board there should be things to put your tiles on, a sack, and some tiles with letters on them. (If you want to check that you have the right tiles, at the side of the board is a list of letters with how many of each letter there should be)

You and the others playing will gather around the board and take a tile holder and take seven random tiles from the sack.

You must now pick who goes first and what order you go in. once you have chosen then one person will make coloums on the piece of paper and write each persons name on the top.

Now the game can begin, the person who goes first will make a word on the centre of the board (at least one of the tiles should be on the orange star in the middle).

The scoring system works like this:

If you put down the word make then you get 11 points M=4 A=1 K=5 E=1. But the person that went first will get double this.

And you all take it in turns, all words must be connected.

If you get a letter on a double letter score, then that letter gets double points (the same applies with triple letter place).

If one of the tiles is on a double word score then the total score of the word is doubled (the same is applied with the triple word score).

If you use all 7 tiles then you gain an extra 50 points.

You must at all times have seven tiles, so if you use 2 tiles on that round, then you must take 2 tiles from the bag at the end of the round.

The game ends when the bag is empty and one person has no tiles left. Once this has happened everyone will have points deducted from their total score (except the person who has no tiles) the ammount of points taken away depends on your tiles. If you have these letters: J S N R then you will have 14 points taken away because the tiles are worth 14 points.

The rules one should know for scrabble are each player chooses 7 letters and the first person makes a word and must place at least one letter on the center square going horizontally or vertically, they then choose the number of tiles they played out of the bag. Play passes to the left and each player must build off of one of the words played. Play continues until all letters are used and one player uses all tiles or every player passes. Scoring is done by adding all the points on your tiles and following any special scores on the colored tiles.

1) It is a great way to practice simple math (Calculating the scores, especially before you play, to practice arithmatic)

2) You can easily expand your vocabulary. Simply write down your tiles during the game, and then after you can go to a free online program (like the one offered by Hasbro itself) and see what words you could have made. This is a great way to expand your vocabulary

3) Strategic thinking. Any two-player game can make you a better strategist. Determining the best local plays, the best tiles to leave in your hand, the best way to block key parts of the board. While all Scabble specific, the critical thought that goes on is valuable in many other games and aspects of life.

4) You learn a lot about word formation, common word patterns, suffixes, prefixes, pluralizations.

The score for each turn is the sum of the letter values in the word formed or modified plus the additional points obtained from placing letters on Premium Squares. A light blue Premium Square doubles the value of the letter placed on it. A dark blue Premium Square triples the value of the letter placed on it. The score for the entire word is doubled when one of the word's letters is placed on a pink Premium Square. It is tripled when one of the word's letters is placed on a red Premium Square. Letter and word premiums count only on the turn in which they are played. On later turns, letters already played on Premium Squares count only at face value. An additional 50 points is awarded to a player who plays all 7 tiles in a single turn. You can locate all of the rules and an explanation of the scoring by searching the internet for "Hasbro Scrabble Rules."

One way to play Speed Scrabble is like Speed Chess. The game requires a dual clock, the same as used in speed chess. At the beginning of the game, both players agree on a set playing time (usually five or ten minutes). When the game starts, the first person's clock starts to count down. At the end of the first turn, the first person pushes a button to stop his clock and start the other player's clock. When one clock runs out, the game is over, and the person with the highest score wins.
