The atomic bombs were used to stop a war that the US did not start. It was a last ditch effort to end a terribly bloody war against a country that attacked the US without warning.

It could have been avoided any time had Japan 1) not attacked the US, or 2) had surrendered when Germany did.

The second bomb could have been avoided had Japan simply surrendered after the first nuclear bomb instead of pursuing the course of insanity that they did.
