Wiggle the casing until you have some room on the inside side of the casing. Place both hands here and tug hard toward the outside of the vehicle. You will hear a loud pop, and think you broke it, but you haven't. There are two plastic spokes with heads inside the casing holding it to the body. The popping sound is simply the heads dislodging from the holes. It takes some force to dislodge them.

This is correct--even for a 2006 Jeep Liberty. You will think you've broken it, but it shouldn't. It was a God-awful snap-creak, but it was okay.
