whatever you do, don't remove the battery from the vehicle.i just did that and wont start even with a new battery.i read on internet it needs a computer reset at the dealer...
----
I had the battery out of my 2004 Passat TDI wagon twice. 1st time for about half hour, while i cleaned the drain holes. 2nd time, when chaning the battery, i plugged in a cable that had cigarette ligter plugs on both ends, one end into a portable starter, and other into cigarette lighter socket on the dash.
After the 1st time, w/o any power for half hour, the car started fine, but i had to re-enter my favorite stations into the radio, and the windows would not auto-close. After I opened and closed the windows few times the auto close feature came back. I guess the computer had to re-learn this function. Everything else worked fine.
2nd time, I assumed the portable battery was dead, since I didn't have power anywhere. could not turn on the radio. but after I put the new battery in, the radio still had my presets, and windows worked normal. I guess it did help to provide power to the dash power outlet (cigarette lighter socket) while battery was disconnected.
sorry, but i don't have the link for battery removing steps at the moment.

Very carefully...
I just had my alternator replaced (at a shop). They told me the mechanic had to "rip the entire front end off" to get to it.
