It's a fun job because you get to use hammers, and you may not have to change it. These almost all get changed because you managed to break off the hook the clutch cable rides in. Start by unhooking the accelerator cable from the carb, then undoing the two bolts that hold the pedal cluster to the tunnel, unhook the accelerator cable, and pull the pedal cluster out. The piece that was inside the tunnel is where the problem lies. If the hook broke off, you've got to replace the shaft. If it DIDN'T break off, you wore through the pin in the clutch cable clevis that goes over the hook. Assuming the hook's broken, start by finding the alignment bolt for the shaft, and remove it. It's a hex-head bolt sticking out of the clutch pedal arm down at the base, and you'll see it. Use a big hammer and a big drift to beat the shaft out of the pedal cluster. Put some grease--lithium, moly, CV grease, whatever you have--on the shaft and slide it into the cluster. Rotate it so the hook is up and the hole for the alignment bolt is lined up, and install the bolt. Jack the left side of your car up and loosen the clutch cable a LOT--you can remove the adjuster nut if you'd like. Catch the pin in the clutch cable clevis over the hook, then set the pedal cluster about where it goes. The brake pedal has a pin coming off it that works the master cylinder. Put this pin into the master cylinder, hook up the accelerator cable and bolt the pedal cluster back in. Finally, adjust the throttle and clutch cables.

How do you know if you have a bad clutch on a 1964 beetle?

The clutch pedal will have more play in it before catching. A good clutch catches near the floor, while a bad clutch must travel further for the clutch plate to meet the flywheel. If the pedal travels close to the top of it's path, then the clutch is probably wearing low.

How do you repair a clutch in a VW Beetle?

assuming this is an older beetle beetle clutch is easy.jack up rear of car and place on jack stands. unhook engine electrical, throttle cable, fuel line, and heater box cables.place jack under engine, undo the four bolts that secure engine to transmission. remove engine.with engine out of car, access to clutch is easy. replace clutch and pressure plate. reinstall engine. an experienced mechanic can do this in 1 hour. If the problem was the cable, remove cable from transmission end, unbolt pedal assembly from center tunnel. clutch pedal has a hook inside the center tunnel that the cable hooks on. slide new cable into tube in center tunnel. replace pedal assembly, keep cable tight enough that it doesn't unhook while you put it back on the transmission end.adjust for correct freeplay

Would the clutch pedal going to the floor and staying on the floor be just the clutch going out or what could it be if so and how do you replace the clutch on a 2001 Maxima?

You should not attempt to replace the clutch yourself unless you have considerable mechanical skills. In this case, the problem is most likely that the spring holding the clutch pedal in place is broken.

Installation instructions for 1966 Volkswagen beetle gas pedal?

There are three parts to the pedal--the pedal itself, the thing it pushes on and the cable coming out the back of it. The pedal is real easy to install because it's held in with a metal rod that sticks through two bent-up places on the floor. You pull the rod out, take out the old pedal, put the new one in and replace the rod. The thing it pushes on is the "pedal cluster." The brake and clutch pedals are part of it. To get this out you gotta jack up the car and unhook the clutch cable from the transmission, then open the engine cover and unhook the accelerator cable from the carb. The cluster is held to the car by two bolts which go into the tunnel. Remove them both, then work the clutch arm out through the hole it goes into. (While you're there, look at the end of the clutch cable and at the clutch arm. If either of them looks questionable, replace it now because floating the gears to get home is not fun.) The cable you replace by removing the pedal cluster, pulling the old cable out, pushing the new one in and reattaching it at both ends. Make sure you get a cable for a carbureted car. The ones for fuel injected cars will work but they're too long.
