Mark the TDC line on the harmonic balancer with whiteout or white chalk. Hook up the timing light to the #1 cylinder spark plug wire (closest to radiator on drivers side). Start engine and spin distributor until the mark moves to 8 degrees before TDC. This is the factory timing.

My Motorhome still has the tune-up specs. on the 454 air cleaner housing. It says to undo the vac. at the distribator and plug it. Make sure the engine is runing at 700 RPMs and set the timing at 4BTC.

under the panel up under the hood on the passenger side you'll find white or grey wire that you unplug. set your timing to spec, mine was 4 degrees then tighten dist. and reconnect wire

4 degrees. unplug the single pole connector under the firewall cover left side where the relays are. it is on the harness under the cover, grey wire. then set your timing. plug back in when your done.

The mark is on the harmonic balancer. The pointer should be visible by looking down from the passenger side of the engine compartment. They're usually bolted to the timing cover.

The timing on a 1997 Dodge Ram is not set with a timing light. The distributor rotor is lined up with the mark on the pick up plate when the engine is at tdc to set base timing. The timing is then fine tuned with a scan tool. The scan tool is used to set it exactly to 0 degrees.

on the crank pulley are two sets of lines, which look the same. however, when setting the timing to tdc, utilize the 2nd set of marks as you face the engine and turn the crankshaft (22mm) clockwise until that 2nd set lines up with the "0" mark on the plastic timing cover.
