Turtles grow at a varying rate depending on the individual and their diet. So you may have a turtle that is 60 cm in shell length and depending on the diet and the individual it may be say 40 years or it may be 25! Your guess is as good as mine. Turtles in captivity have been known to grow at a much quicker rate than turtles in the wild and these are the only turtles that can be known for sure their true age. Another interesting fact about seaturtle growth rate is that the Pacific seaturtles grow at a slower growth rate than the Atlantic turtles of the same species. To correctly gauge the age of a majestic seaturtle, you must capture it and cut it in half so you can count the rings on the inside of the shell.

Count the rings on a carapace (top shell) scale. They add a ring each year, just like a tree.
