It may not be perfect, but a good Dog Training system is one of positive reinforcement. This means whenever a dog does what you want it to, you give the dog a treat and praise. When a dog does something bad, you simply say no in a stern voice.

Also be sure NOT to hit or yell at your dog. :( This does not improve your dog's chances of learning to do what you want it to do.

If using command-based training, the steps are:
1. Give the stimulus (command).
2. Illicit the desired response.
3. Reinforce.
If using operant conditioning, the steps are:
1. Wait for the desired behavior to be offered.
2. Reinforce each instance of the behavior until you can predict that the dog is about to do it again.
3. Start giving the command just before the dog is expected to do the behavior and continue to reinforce.
4. Teach stimulus discrimination.
5. Fade secondary or conditioned reinforcers.
To learn to train a dog, your best bet is to enroll with your dog in a dog obedience class. Certain aspects of dog training involve skills you cannot learn by reading a book or on the internet. Specifically, you cannot learn proper timing, and you cannot learn to read what the dog is thinking and what he is about to do. These two things can only be learned through trial and error (which increases the time it takes to learn to train) or at the side of a skilled trainer.

Where do you buy a service dog vest?

Remember that a vest doesn't make a dog a service dog. Claiming a dog is a service dog when you are not disabled, or when the dog is not individually trained to perform tasks that mitigate your disability is a criminal offense that can result in fines and or jail time. Most legitimate teams get their vests from the programs that train their dogs. Those who are qualified to train dogs for themselves (ie have the experience and skill), generally know where to get the gear.

How is a service dog recognized?

The definition of a service dog is a dog that has been individually trained to assist a disabled person with their disability (this naturally includes proper public behavior). Once that training occurs and the dog behaves properly in public and does at least one task to assist the legally disabled handler with something they have problems doing by themselves then it can be called a service dog. There are no specific certifying bodies for service dogs. The trainer decides when the dog is ready to be called fully trained and most agencies usually ensures that the handler meets disability requirements. Agencies that train service dogs commonly provide some kind of documentation that their agency and their trainers deem the dog to be sufficiently trained to be called a service dog. Disabled people that train their own, as the trainers, bear those same responsibilities.

Is there any in home service dog training in MI?

Most service dog agencies require you to spend two weeks at their facility to be trained with your new partner. There are independent dog trainers that will train a dog in your home. You would just have to check your area for a dog trainer and ask them if they do service training. Sterling Service Dogs in Sterling Heights Michigan offers individual training and do not require a two week stay away from your home.

How do you train a dog into a guard dog?

It is not possible for a dog to be a service dog if it has not been trained to perform specific tasks to assist a person with a disability. In order to be considered a service dog, the animal must be trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability. Without this training, a dog cannot legally be classified as a service dog. For more information just type out the link: ʜᴛᴛᴘꜱ://ᴡᴡᴡ.ᴅɪɢɪꜱᴛᴏʀᴇ24.ᴄᴏᴍ/ʀᴇᴅɪʀ/434590/ᴍᴀꜱᴀᴍᴜɴᴇ12/

Can service dogs be trained while living with the future owner patient?

A disabled person may train their own service dog. But check your state laws first. Not all states allow public access with a service dog in training and some only allow if you are with a professional service dog program. The ADA does not cover service dogs in training. It is suggested that all service dogs be trained to the standards of Assistance Dogs International (ADI)
