It was probably confusing, because his mother (who was American and living in Hawaii) married a fellow college student from Kenya, but the man abandoned the family when Barack was only two. His mom, who studied Anthropology, re-married and Barack spent several years in Indonesia, where he attended a private school for American and western kids (the children of diplomats also attended). But then, his mom came back to Hawaii, where he was raised mainly by his grandparents. He was very close to them and has written about how they inspired him. He also wrote about how even when his mom was ill, she always wanted him to study hard and she helped him with his homework. But despite some of the changes he went through, Barack Obama has said he believes he had an interesting and generally happy childhood.

He graduated from high school in Hawaii in 1979, and went to Occidental College in Los Angeles (some photos of him there are still online). By his own admission, he was still unsure about a direction for his life; he had experimented with drugs in high school, and was not yet focused on his education. He ultimately transferred to Columbia University, in New York, and there, he seemed to find himself, as well as deciding what he wanted to do with his life. He graduated with a degree in Political Science, and interviews with some of his professors indicate that he was becoming very interested in helping people living in poverty. After he graduated in 1983, he found a job in Chicago, working for a Catholic-run charity that advocated for the poor.
