Latin is commonly considered a dead language. But infact, it is alive.
After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, Europe fell into the Dark Ages. During this time, the Black Plague occurred and great famine and poverty spread. Instead of being ruled by the Empire, Europe fell into the feudal system, and eventually divided into induvidual countries with unique languages. But, Latin was preserved in the intellectual centers of the time, monasteries. In the monasteries, monks recopied The Bible in Latin as well as other texts. Also, masses were not said in the vernacular until Vatican 2 in the 20th century, so masses were all in Latin. Latin also had a large affect on the development of modern "Romance" languages (coming from Rome) such as French, Spanish, and Italian.
