The Roman Republic was established in 509 BC after a rebellion awhich deposed the last king of Rome, Tarquinius Superbus, who was a tyrant. The Romans decided to go away with the monarchy to prevent the return of tyranny. They did so by replacing the king with two annually elected consuls. Having two men in charge meant that they could counterbalance each other. The short term of office mean that no man could concentrate power in his hands. Thus, the Roman republic was good to Rome by ensuring that tyranny would not reoccur.

For a time, the Roman Republic experienced political conflict regarding power-sharing between the patricians (the aristocracy) and the commoners. The republic further developed in a process of mediating and resolving this conflict and then achieved stability. However, it eventually fell under the weight of Imperialism. Its institutions developed while Rome was still a relatively small city-state. Imperial expansion created social and economic transformations which these institutions were unable to cope with. This contributed to the outbreak of a series of civil wars (there were 13 civil wars in the last 61 years of the Republic). These civil wars tore the Republic apart, which then fell and was replaced by the period of rule by emperors.
