Indirectly, yes, there was religion in World War I. Both sides prayed to the same God for victory, and religious leaders blessed the troops, the ships and so on, even though God was clearly not influencing the outcome. But this was one war that was not started because of religion and was not fought over religion.

No. World War I was essentially the result of economic rivalry between the two great powers, Britain and Germany. There had been an uneasy understanding that Britain would pursue its economic interests overseas, while Germany would dominate trade on the European continent. When Britain began to intrude into the German sphere of influence, war became inevitable.

If there was an essential underlying reason for theoutbreak of World War II, it was the patently unfair and punitive terms placed on Germany after the end of World War I. Germany was bankrupted by the reparations it was required to make. Hyperinflation reduced even some of the wealthiest to poverty, and the people were looking for scapegoats. Hitler cleverly blamed the Jews for the plight of the individuals, refused to make further reparations and prepared for war. Arguably, if it had not been Hitler, another demagogue would sooner or later have taken his place. Wold War II was the aftermath of World War I.

No, it started because England tried to claim rights to the water in the North Sea and Germany needed the waterway for export. Germany attacked England and it was the start of WW1, countries picked sides.

Following World War I, soldiers came home from the war feeling disillusioned with all the gore and Horror they had seen. As a result, many people turned away from religion.
