Containment is a policy adopted in 1947 by the Truman administration. The objective was to build "situations of strength" around the globe in order to contain the spread of communism and contain the Soviet Union. After World War II, the Soviets had control of eastern Europe. Containment was designed to prevent the Soviet Union from expanding its powers beyond that area. American leaders wanted to halt the spread of communism by giving economic aid to nations that were threatened by the Soviets or other totalitarian regimes. The Truman Doctrine, outlined in a speech by the President in 1947, explained the policy. The Marshall Plan, designed to help Europe with badly needed economic aid, was an example of containment in action. MrV

What were some of the ways Europe Asia and Latin America use the policy of containment?

The term containment has been and can be used for anything; the containment of a disease; the containment of water; containing a fire. Or containing a criminal in a building until he is either overtaken or surrenders to law enforcement. Containment was used in Europe, Asia, and Latin America to contain problems encountered by those regions. During the cold war the "term" CONTAINMENT was used to control communism. That was a name used to prevent the spread of communism. Military force was used to prevent that spread. Either by just showing up and letting them see the military force; as happened during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Or by actually USING the military force by killing them in war; as happened in the Korean War and Vietnam War.
