The soviet union wanted to create a buffer zone to the west Russia. This "Iron curtain" , as it came to be known , would take the hit before Russia did. It may or may not been Stalin's intention to use this to spread communism , but it was certainly for the Motherland's protection.

Military might. With the power gap left by the defeated Germans, the USSR was able to usurp their position as controller of Eastern Europe by sheer right of conquest. At the Yalta conference and other meetings during WW2, the Allies had given Stalin assurances in terms of territorial influence as well.

The Soviet Union had a head start when it dealt with East Germany after WW2. The two most radical groups in Germany before the war were the Nazi's and the Communists. There was little doubt in the early 1930's that Stalin had a great influence on the Communist Party in Germany.

After the War, a new Communist regime was placed in power with the military backing of the Soviet Union. The home grown Party members with the backing of the Soviet Union helped maintain East Germany as part of the Soviet Block.
