Certainly no where near as linked in terms of communication as it is today. Computers, among other things, are seen as s very fast means of communication. And that is very true. email is continuing to replace standard mail, or snail mail, as more and more people begin to use Email for everyday purposes.

There are several answers to this question, depending on what you define as the internet. If you are thinking DARPANET/Milnet then it was a handful of Unix machines at college universities running Unix or a vendor-supplied operating system. Users would log in using ASCII terminals over the local network (Often RS-232 Cabling/Serial Communications). At that time computing power was centralized, users shared all or most computing resources, firewalls/security/viri were nonexistant or at the best in the concept stage, and the major computers communicated with each other over primative links.

Home computing, at that time mostly nonexistant, would begin to emerge with the small computer clubs and homemade computers. The Apple ][ would soon emerge, then BBS systems, along with an expansion of the "web" in general spurred on by goper, email, xmodem, ftp, http, and other technologies that we have today.

For the most general answer: non-networked plain text or highly primitive graphics computers, home ones without hard drives. Software programs extremely tiny, and redistributed either on floppy diskette or as source code typed into a computer from a magazine.

For college students and business users, there was some primitive networking, the ability to communicate and share data as these frameworks were evolving. The ability to have data stored as either Reel to Reel tape, on a Hard Drive (which were huge and ungodly expensive), or even as paper cards with holes punched into them! Even in those situations processing power was centralized and shared, as was the (limited) storage available.

Before that, computers were purpose built behemoths of vaccum tubes and non-transistorized electronics that would not be recognizable as a computer today, and are easily outpaced by even the most basic $1 calculator.

I'm pretty sure that wouldn't happen, but I'd have to say a better life; because many people are addicted to the internet. They don't do anything, and it can get really bad for kids, causing their grades to drop drastically. I have absolutely nothing against a computer, I do have something against Bill Gates for scamming, and stealing the First PC.
