Fighting on the Western Front invovled trench warfare, while on the Eastern Front the war was much more mobile.
War on the Eastern front against Russia was marked by atrocities by both the "Vons" (Germans) and the "Ivans" ( Russians). Being captured meant you would probably be tortured to death and so this fact led to the utmost brutality .
The Germans viewed the Russian as "Untermensch" (Less than [sub]human) so it made it easier to kill without mercy . The Russians , understandably , felt the need to reciprocate in kind .
Most historians believe that the Eastern front of World War II was by far the bloodiest, savage campaigns in all of world history. The Russians lost millions of men due to being killed in action by the Germans, by disease, and by the elements. The Russians were ill-equipped to handle the Germans during Operation Barbarossa, as the Germans were superior in every way in terms of armament(artillery, tanks, weapons, etc), and training. In the beginning of the invasion, the Germans gained miles of territory deep into the Soviet Union everyday. However, once the winter came, the tables turned. German High Command anticipated the invasion of the Soviet Union to be quick, taking three major objectives(cities), two of which were to cut the Soviet's supply lines in half and the other for Propaganda purposes. However, as time went on, the elements overwhelmed the German troops--as they had been wearing Late-summer early-fall uniforms and clothing. The Soviets, however, were very prepared for this and were able to slowly, but surely, push the Germans back west. Many Eastern front German soldiers never returned home, either due to frostbite, hypothermia, starvation, being KIA, or being captured. My Grandfather himself landed on Utah beach, and let me tell you that was no picnic. It really comes down to opinion, really, which side was more brutal, the Western or Eastern front, both were absolutely horrendous, however given the time I've put into researching, I must say the Eastern Front takes the cake. The elements alone killed tens of thousands if not more.
