During early Immigration, the Irish were largely unwanted in large cities, as evidence by windowfront signs like "No dog or Irish" and "Irish need not apply." Not only were the Irish part of a huge influx of immigrants overwhelming the cities, but they were a largely Catholic group thrust into a nation with a Protestant heritage.

Over the years, however, the Irish assimilated exceedingly well, finding influential positions in law enforcement, the law and politics.
