At first there weren't any children in the colonies, but when they did come they did have school. It wasn't like it is today, they would use little personal chalk boards, for notebooks and there were around ten or less children in each class, with one teacher. It was also different because it was called a school house and it was one building with one room.
The first school law in 1635 that stated that when an area reached a set population a public school had to be established. The Boston Latin School was the first public school and the first tax supported public school in North America was opened in Dorchester. Massachusetts in 1639. Colonist tried to teach by the traditional English methods of family, church, community, and apprenticeships with schools later becoming the key agent in socialization. At first math and reading were taught in the family. By the late 1770's schools were taught by ministers and private tutors were used. Many schools were tied to churches and related teaching through scripture. Textbooks were imported from England and in 1836 the McGuffy Reader appeared. Higher education was oriented toward training men to be ministers before 1800. Doctors and lawyers were trained in local apprenticeships. The teachers in colonial schools were called schoolmaster and there was no special education for teachers in education until the 1900's when teachers were trained in normal schools. In 1837 Horace Mann became secretary of education worked to create a statewide system in Massachusetts of professional teachers based on common schools in Prussia as a model. In 1848 students were placed by age to different grades and a lecture method was used for teaching.
