It depended on the owner and the number of slaves. As a valuable labor source, most were provided food and accommodations, but were often mistreated. Some would be used as an example if they attempted escape. Household slaves usually received much better treatment. There was always the chance that they could be sold to another slaveowner, or become the property of cruel heirs.
In the worst cases, they were whipped, beaten, and sometimes killed. They were given minimal food, including only cornmeal, salt herrings, and 8 pounds of pork or its equivalent of fish. They were given 2 coarse linen shirts, 2 pairs of pants, 1 jacket, 1 pair of socks, and 1 pair of shoes. Young children were given only 2 linen shirts; and when those ran out the were forced to run around naked, no matter the weather. Their homes were wooden shacks, and they slept on piles of straw or grass. Some girls had children at the age of 13, and were sold under the description of ' good breeding stock'. Many children were separated from their families at a young age, and never saw their parents or siblings again.

African slaves in southern colonies were subjected to harsh treatment, including forced labor, physical abuse, and dehumanization. They were often separated from their families, faced brutal working conditions on plantations, and had limited rights and freedoms. Slaves were considered property and were treated as such by their owners.
Plantations are very big farms and range from 50 acres to 500 acres. The colonist were needed to harvest or plant the crops. They were also needed to take care of the people who owned the plantations. They had to make beds, and things like that. The slaves were needed badly and they were treated poorly.
