King James I was a big fan of the English colonization of America. And what would be a good and quick way to support such a goal? The lottery! Created in 1612, the Virginia Company of London was in charge of raising money for the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia. After that proved a success, more people in England were interested in settling in America, all greatly supported by the lottery. Many lotteries were organised in North America, both before and after Independence, including ones sponsored by George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.
